Pop star PJ Proby was committed for Crown Court trial yesterday, charged with cheating the benefits system out of more than £47,000.
The 72-year-old, who found fame in the 1960s, will appear before a judge at Worcester Crown Court on April 26 to answer charges of cheating the public revenue.
Proby, who has pleaded not guilty, spoke only to confirm his real name - James Marcus Smith - during his appearance at Worcester Magistrates' Court.
The pensioner, of Twyford, near Evesham, Worcestershire, faces a total of nine charges relating to claims for pension credit, housing benefit and council tax benefit.
Among the charges against the star are two counts of failing to declare income from savings and investments, and four of failing to notify the authorities of a change in circumstances.
Proby, who was granted unconditional bail, is alleged to have committed the offences between November 2002 and March 2008.
